Are you looking for the best place to sell old video games and consoles online? At ToysWanted, we love retro gaming and we’ll happily make you a free, no obligation offer for your old consoles, games and accessories. We buy single items right through to entire collections, and if you accept our offer we’ll even pay for the postage. It’s the easiest way to turn that old gaming gear in the loft into cash.

Q: What counts as a vintage video game or console?

A: We’re talking about the home consoles and handheld game consoles released between the late 1970s and the end of the 1990s. So anything from the Atari 2600 era right through to the Nintendo 64, original PlayStation and Sega Dreamcast.

The first home consoles hit the UK in the late 70s with the Atari 2600 (originally branded as the VCS), but things really took off in the late 80s and early 90s when Nintendo and Sega went head-to-head with the NES, Master System, Mega Drive and Super Nintendo. The original PlayStation arrived in 1995 and changed the landscape again. By the late 90s, gaming had become one of the biggest forms of entertainment in the country and the consoles and games from this era are now hugely collectible.

Q: Which video games and consoles do you buy?

A: We buy almost any console released between roughly 1977 and 1999, along with their games, controllers and accessories. Some of the consoles we’re keenest on include:

  • Atari 2600 (and the early VCS-branded version)
  • Atari 7800, Lynx and Jaguar
  • Mattel Intellivision
  • ColecoVision
  • Sega Master System
  • Sega Mega Drive (along with the Mega CD and 32X add-ons)
  • Sega Game Gear
  • Sega Saturn
  • Sega Dreamcast
  • Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)
  • Super Nintendo (SNES)
  • Nintendo 64
  • Nintendo Game Boy, Game Boy Pocket and Game Boy Color
  • Virtual Boy
  • Sony PlayStation (the original PS1)
  • Neo Geo AES and Neo Geo Pocket
  • NEC PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16

If you’ve got something not on this list and you’re not sure, just ask. We’re always interested to hear what’s out there.

Q: Are my old games and consoles worth anything?

A: Quite possibly more than you think. Retro gaming has gone from being a niche hobby to a serious collector’s market over the last decade, and prices for boxed consoles, sealed games and rare cartridges have climbed steadily.

A loose, common cartridge might only be worth a few pounds. A boxed console in good condition with original packaging and inserts can fetch hundreds. And rare games like the original boxed copies of certain SNES and Mega Drive titles, or anything Neo Geo, can be worth serious money.

The biggest factors are condition (boxed and complete is always best), rarity (some games had very small print runs) and demand (certain franchises are far more sought after than others).

Q: Do you buy loose cartridges and discs without boxes?

A: Yes, absolutely. Most of the games we get sent are loose, and that’s fine. Boxed and complete games are worth more, but a loose cartridge or disc still has value, especially if it’s clean and in working order.

Q: Do you buy controllers and accessories?

A: We do. Original controllers in good condition are surprisingly hard to find, particularly for older consoles. We also buy light guns (NES Zapper, Sega Light Phaser, Konami Justifier), official memory cards, multitaps, Rumble Paks, expansion packs and original power supplies that came with the consoles. Anything genuine and from the era, basically.

Q: Do you buy broken consoles or games that don’t work?

A: No, we’re currently only able to buy consoles and games that are in full working order.

Q: Do you buy boxed and sealed games?

A: We love them. A boxed game with the original inner tray, manual and any inserts is always going to be worth more than a loose copy. Sealed games (still in the original shrink wrap and never opened) are at the top of the tree, and we’ll always make a strong offer on those.

Q: Do you buy import games or PAL only?

A: PAL only. Most of the games and consoles people have at home in the UK will already be PAL, and that’s what we’re looking to buy. We’re not currently buying NTSC imports from the US or Japan, so please bear that in mind when you get in touch.

Q: Do you only buy original items?

A: Yes. We don’t buy reproduction cartridges, fake boxes, modern reprints or knock-off accessories. Everything we purchase is genuine and from the original release period.

Q: How do I sell my old video games and consoles?

A: It’s really simple. Here’s how it works:

  1. Head over to our Sell my toys page and fill in the form with details of what you’ve got. A few photos really help, and don’t worry about being technical, just tell us what’s there and roughly what condition it’s in.
  2. We’ll take a look and come back to you with a free, no-obligation offer.
  3. If you’re happy with the offer, drop us an email to accept and we’ll send you the postage details.
  4. Pack everything up safely and either drop it at your local Post Office or arrange a home collection. We’ll cover the postage cost.
  5. Once your items arrive and we’ve checked them over, we’ll send your payment by your chosen method, usually within 24 hours.

If you’re not sure about anything or you’ve got questions before you start, just drop us a message and we’ll be happy to help.
